May 2005

This month were setting out to define boat construction terms - some of which you might see used in your survey - as May is a good month to check your vessel over from bow to stern, allowing enough time to make repairs or upgrades without missing too much of the boating season.

Any partition or wall on the boat

Chine
In flat- or V-bottomed boats, the line fore and aft formed by the intersection of side and bottom
Coaming

Displacement
Volume of water displaced by the hull
Draft
Depth from the waterline to the vessel's lowest point

A mode of construction in which the strakes or planks overlap; also referred to as "clinker built"
